Multi Day Ski Touring - Ski Mountaineering

Ski-Mountaineering multi-day Iceland

Join us on the 3 Day alpine ski touring trip and ski the iconic volcano´s of Iceland and explore the black sand beach of the south coast, on the same trip. Our plan is to ski Eyjafjallajökull volcano that got in the headlines in newspapers around the world in 2010 for shutting down air traffic in Europe. Also on the itinerary is the mighty Hvannadalshnúkur, Iceland's highest peak. The peaks are both glaciated volcano´s and sit by the south coast. On the transfer from Eyjafjallajökull over to the Skaftafell national park, the home of the mighty giant we have the opportunity to explore the south coasts waterfalls, black sand beaches, glaciers, and small towns.

Trip plan:

Day 1:

We leave the city of Reykjavik behind and head east for the Eyjafjallajökull volcano. Upon arrival, we park in the basin of the mountain, prepare our skis and start the ascent. We start at 60m above sea level and gain 1600m. In about 1000m elevation, we rope up and get ready to travel the glacier. After reaching the top we prepare for skiing down the volcano and enjoy the turns we earned when hiking up. After a good day out in the mountains, we settle in at a local guest house right under Eyjafjallajökull and spend the night there.

Day 2

Transfer day. We drive east along the south coast, stop at Skógafoss waterfall, the black sand beach and in one of the small fishing villages on the way for a lunch break. After about 5 hour drive and sightseeing, we arrive in Skaftafell national park where we go glacier hiking. We spend the night in Skaftafell

Day 3:

Get ready to take on the giant, today we ski Mt.Hvannadalshnúkur. The elevation gain is 2100m (6800ft). The ascent is gentle, but long (12km) with views over the black sand beach, glaciers, and surrounding mountains. On the top, the view to the north is over the ice cap of Vatnajökull and to the south the north Atlantic ocean. The best part of the day awaits, the backcountry ski run down is something to tell stories about. After we get as far as we can on skis, we hike the rest down before we get into the car again and drive back to Reykjavík where we drop you off at your accommodation for some well-deserved rest.
