4 day course (40hrs) that builds the base platform for future glacier guides. The training is according to standards set by Asccociation of Icelandic Mountainguides AIMG.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Basic guide training for hard ice guiding takes four days and takes place on outlet glaciers.

Course topics include:

  • Route selection
  • Hazard identification
  • Risk management
  • Group management.
  • Communication with guests 
  • Crevasse rescue 
  • Ice climbing   

PREREQUISITES

The following bullet points are the must know prerequisites of this course. Applicant should have:

  • Basic mountaineering skills

  • Confidence in basic crampon movement techniques on simple hard ice terrain

  • Intermediate outdoor experience

  • Basic rope management skills

  • Knowledge in mountaineering knots

EVALUATION

Students will be evaluated throughout the course according to the course curriculum set by the Association of Icelandic Mountainguides. Constructive and realistic feedback will be given by the instructors at the end of each course, and at the end of a given day if needed.

UPON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION

Students are trained according to AIMG standards and can apply for membership with Association of Icelandic Mountainguides.
